New Year's Resolutions | 3 Tips to Make Resolutions That Last

The time has come again. A new year and fresh goals to start the new fiscal year.

While it can be exciting to think of all of the big goals, for both your professional and personal life, it's important to set the right tone for the new year. Whether you're a goal setter year-round or are looking to kick-start 2023 in the best way possible, it's important to set realistic goals for yourself. Read on for the top 3 tips from our experts on how to set yourself up for success in 2023.

  1. Set 1-2 resolutions for the year. It can be tempting to make big changes with the start of a new year. Our team recommends sitting down and thinking about areas you can tweak and setting a resolution for one or two key areas. For example, you may want to start coming into the office earlier in the morning. Use this as a great base to kickstart a resolution. Perhaps going into the office 15 minutes earlier and gradually moving to 30 minutes. By creating a gradual goal (and only choosing one resolution), you will be more likely to stick to your resolution for the duration of 2023.

  2. Establish your personal key performance indicators (KPIs). Regardless if your organization created annual or quarterly objectives, setting personal key performance indicators (KPIs) can be essential to growing and continuing your professional career. Our team recommends creating both annual and quarterly KPIs for your role to reassess where you would like to be at the start of the following new year. These KPIs can additionally be used when it comes to discussing your successes at your annual performance review and provide a great basis for feedback.

A great example of a KPI would include completing a certificate before 12/31/2023. Through using the SMART goal setting technique you'll be able to create tangible KPIs for your professional development throughout 2023.

  3. Track your progress. It's important to see how far you come over the year! Choose a platform or method you prefer for keeping track of your goals. A few of our team's favorite tools for tracking include Notion, Google Sheets, or old-fashioned pen and paper to write down their goals and more importantly, track their progress. By setting an intentional practice to track goals you will be more inclined and motivated to keep achieving your goals. Don't forget to celebrate both the small and big wins along the way!

By following these three tips, you'll be able to set realistic and achievable goals for 2023. Apply these tips to both your professional and personal life to make your 2023 new year's resolutions as successful as possible.
