It's no secret how quickly the weather changes in Alberta (sometimes even within the same day)! Our team thinks it is imperative to start a healthy mind and body practice moving forward into the cold, dark, and long winter months.
We spoke with our team and compiled some of their favourite tips to stay healthy and active during the colder months. Check out the full tips below:
1 – Maintain a healthy diet. Focusing on your diet can be a great way to ensure your blood sugar levels are staying consistent in the colder months. Limiting items like fatty or salty foods and increasing vitamin rich foods like; legumes, nutes, lean meats, and fish, can improve your mood and health.
2 – Get at least 10 minutes of sunlight daily. Get outside and enjoy watching the seasons change. You'll be able to see the shifts in not only the weather but the environment as well. Make sure it bundle up on colder days and take in Calgary's sunlight.
3 – Maintain your normal routine. Although the sun comes up later and goes down earlier, it's important to ensure consistency in your daily routine. If you walk your dog every morning, keep this routine up — it will help with keeping your body and mind motivated daily!
4 – Increase your diet with Vitamin D rich foods. The sun can be scarce during the winter months, coming up in the late morning and setting as you are finishing up your work day, that's why it's important to increase Vitamin D rich foods in your diet. Dairy foods and fatty fish (like salmon or tuna) are excellent additions you should consider in your winter diet.
5 – Set an exciting spring goal. Whether it's looking forward to an event, a trip, or buying a new item, set a spring goal. During the cold winter months you'll have something to look forward to and keep top of mind.
