The 5 Types of Well-Being in the Workplace

When we think of well-being we often think, exercise, water, a healthy diet, and sunshine. But well-being can go so much deeper than that. With team members spending 40 hours a week in the workplace, well-being has no longer become only an employee's responsibility, it now overlaps with their professional career. This opens up the opportunity for employers to support their team in both their personal and professional lives.

Provided by Future Workplace, an Executive Networks company, there are five key levers that can advance an employee's well-being in the workplace:

  1. Financial Well-Being: Oftentimes financial well-being will be discussed when an employee first joins your organization. Addressing overall compensation will be a natural fit at the beginning, but how can you go further to add value for your existing employees? Consider adding retirement plans, stock options, or education surrounding financial wellness. By keeping this top of mind for all employees, you'll go beyond the initial conversation of finances when a new employee joins your company.

  2. Mental Health Well-Being: Mental health has always been important, but in recent years it has become more widely acknowledged and it's important to consider adding mental health benefits for your team. Access to an EmployeeAssistance Program, mental health sessions with a therapist or coach, and mental health apps are all methods to open up the conversation towards mental well-being for your employees.

  3. Social Well-Being: Company culture has become extremely important, especially in the wake of The Great Resignation. Job hunters are seeking out companies that align their personal values to the company culture and values. Beyond adding importance to your company culture, your company can also offer a work-life balance solution, and types of relationships both at work and outside of work. Building and nurturing these employee relationships can make a significant difference for the overall company culture.

  4. Physical Well-Being: As previously mentioned, exercise and diet come first to mind when we think about physical well-being & these items are often sought out by employees in their personal time. As an employer you can add additional benefits for employees such as; health insurance, wellness programs, workplace safety & training, and offering a variety of exercise sessions, either in-person or virtually. Bringing in a mobile massage therapist to an in-office session could allow the time for your team to enjoy a break & take care of their physical well-being.

  5. Career Well-Being:Through providing opportunities for your team to level up their career, you offer the chance to fulfill their need to professionally excel and learn more while in the workplace. Various methods to do this include; training and development, tuition reimbursement, internal mobility opportunities, performance reviews, and coaching/mentoring. Consider adding these career benefits to your organization.

By taking into account the five key levers to well-being for employees in the workplace, you'll see high satisfaction amongst your team. Which well-being category will you implement first for your team?
